I know a lot of you have found my tutorial for getting XP on the EEE very useful. I haven't really asked for anything back in the past, but I'm asking for your help now.
I have entered the Cisco Digital Cribs contest, and the winner is largely based on the number of views. All you have to do, at the bare minimum, is click on this link and check out my video on Cisco's website:

If you feel like you want to do more than that, please send a link to a couple friends. Every view counts, and I really appreciate all your help! Thanks!
=============
I have been working on this guide the past couple of days. I know a lot of people have had problems with nLite installs and stuff not working, so I decided to make an end-all be all guide to nLite'ing XP, installing it on the Eee, installing all of the drivers, and then optimizing the install for maximum speed and size after all of the ASUS drivers and all of the Windows Updates are installed.
My finally XP installation is 537MB with SP2 and all updates, and boots in around 17 seconds. I imagine that others will be able to achieve the same or close to the same numbers by following the guide step by step. All of my hardware in XP works, including the sound and video camera, and there are no "rogue" devices in Device Manager. I can connect to unsecure, WEP, and WPA-PSK wireless networks. The stripped installation is 100% tested and working.
Here's the link:

The article looks longer than it is because there are a lot of pictures, but I wanted to be thorough. Enjoy!

Thank for this, I have been looking for something like this that brings it all together.

kudos ... well documented, excellent job!
although i prefer to integrate the drivers and all security updates into the CD ... better than cleaning up the mess after auto-update ![]()
p.s.: why would you need defrag on the SSD or SDHC card?

Bravo, and thank you for your time & effort.
That is exactly what many of us had been waiting for.
All the best to you.
OK
PS: If I understand correctly, you are NOT downloading/installing these 3 XP drivers from the ASUS site:
1. AsusFix For Eee PC bundled WIN XP model
2. Inf Update
3. Touchpad Driver

Does your guide cover or work by using a bootable USB drive instead of USB CD/DVD driver as well?

The only thing you might want to add to this great How Too: is how to relocate the Temp and My Documents folders assigned locations over to the SDHC card.

No. I have access to an external CD-ROM drive... KINDA.
If you have access to one of those external IDE hard drive cages, you can pull the circuit board out of it and connect it to the back of an IDE optical drive (CD/DVD/CD-R/etc) and it'll work just fine. This is what I ended up doing. It's not pretty, but I had the parts lying around so it didn't cost anything.

I did the same thing with my external drive and I thought I was the only one heh... Good write up and cant wait to reinstall the os. My current xp install with all updates is just over 3gig... (ouch) no page file and relcated temp and my documents with old page file erased...

hello
you've made a little mistake : "Click the Display tab and add the custom resolution 800x640. Fill out the rest of the information as seen here:"

This is a great guide, just one question, do with all of the drivers deleted everytime you insert something like a usb drive or an external hdd you will have to install the drivers manually? to me that almost gets rid of the need for the space.

Simple things like USB mass storage devices still work without any drivers. Things like digital cameras that just serve as mass storage devices (like my Canon) require no drivers either.
If you plug in a printer or a wacom tablet or something, you'd need to install drivers. USB flash drives, external CD drives, SD cards, etc. need no drivers though. :-)

Thanks for the update, looks like I will be re installing yet again, any thoughts on how to strip down the size after SP3 is installed?
Offline
I imagine that removing the $NtUninstall directories from c:\Windows and removing the contents of c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download post SP3 install would get it down to about as low as you could go.

AsusACPIServer - This is the ACPI driver for your Eee. You can safely delete this and the Windows ACPI driver will do a fine job of controlling fan speed with CPU temp.
"
I found I need AsusACPIServer for Fn keys to work on my Windows XP.

I found that mine work, I just don't get the visual pop-up graphics that tell you what it's doing.
