I was thinking of placing a USB fingerprint scanner to the right of the touchpad, this would enable auto windows login, auto password entry on websites and applications and would be a nice addition to my touchscreen.
I've seen a few standalone USB readers: here
And also USB memory sticks with fingerprint readers: here
Im sure the stick reader would be smaller and easier to accomodate (as well as adding 8gb storage!) but I'm not sure if it has the same features and if needed, whether the fingerprint reader could be disconnected from the memory stick and still function?
Anyone have a play with these or consider hacking in a fingerprint reader?
TIA

well, putting in a fingerprint scanner would require case modding, and unless you know what youre doing, it might make the laptop not look as sexy anymore, but you go right ahead! id like to see something like this

Someone did it to a mac notebook once... now face recognition with the webcam is possible in XP also, isn't it? That would be even more fun and would not require a physical mod. ![]()
Here's the Mac mod:

I've been trying to get just the casing for the eee so i can do case mods like this. I would rather work on a second case then just the one I have.
I have thought about putting one on mine.

What about fitting something like the USB Stick Scanner that's linked.
Into the Webcam area. You lose your webcam but gain a Biometric Reader!
Question is, looking @ the pic, looks like the actual reader area is quite slim. Hmmm...
edit forgot! You'd also be adding 8GB of memory as well with this mod! ![]()

i have a microsoft one for my pc. its about 5 cm long 2-3 cm wide not sure about circuit inside and it gives off a red glow it is quite cool and very useful! The only problem is you will need to keep it clean inside the lens and make sure you dont get any dirt there.

I wondered about this mod too. You could easily wit the scanner to one side of the screen, where a not so perfect cutout wouldn't be so visible. But to be honest, it would also be best if the BIOS made use of it, so the eee couldn't be used at all by an unauthorised person.

I've ordered this.
I'll see how chunky it is when disected and report back on my plans.

I picked one up recently that is pretty small.
I have a second eee case coming so I can mod that one.
Offline
ah nice, ive been looking for a second case, a write-up w/tools used would be nice, its gonna be tricky getting a nicy finish on the case i think.

I think if you're careful/capable with your cutting tool. Take your time & use some type of gasket/strip to cover the edges of your cut. It may be a much simpler affair than initially thought!
Can't wait for the results either!

I'm very curious also. Keep it up!

I have a second palm rest coming.
I will install it into that. I am just going to cut a hole the same shape as the scanner with my dremel and secure at the proper height with a hot glue gun. I am going to use JST connectors so I can detach the touch screen still.

Anyone who tries this. For the default distro the fprint libraries allow for kde logon to work. though i am struggling to get them to work on the eee. any help would be appreciated.
For windows the best software by far is the protection suite available with upek devices.

guys guys, we have so got to start an Asus Modifiers World Congress ![]()
Can't wait for the results of this ... I am pretty sure that Asus is watching too, and one day soon...
keep it up, it's great seeing what people do!

Question about the USB Sticks with the memory & scanner.
On some of the sticks I've noticed that the biometric scanner is used for locking the stick itself & only the stick & it's contents. On others it seems they can do both your web~passwords & your system memory & even OS passwords as well as it's own memory.
Could a program like the one suggested (protection suite available with upek devices) be downloaded & used with a USB stick that only locks it's contents with their provided software? Or, is there other software that can 'change' how a dedicated Biometric USB device interacts with your system?
I'm seeing some limitations with some of the Biometric USB Devices with memory.
On a truly dedicated scanner it's obvious but not so on the others.

i think (by no means sure) that if you can find software to interface with the scanner the software can do what it likes (lock the PC, input passwords into websites e.t.c.) if your stick comes with software only designed to encrypt the sticks memory, and no other software with more features will work with the stick then you're stuck.

I just picked this one up... My current plan is to mount it where the cam would normally go (I've got a surf).

Nice! I'd swap the webcam in my 8G for this little gem in a second, if I had the know-how.

If you purchase a dedicated fingerprint scanner it will do your computer. For websites and bootup and any passwords you have.

@shelldude
that fingerprint scanner is awesomly small and sexy !
if you take it out of the cover, would it also fit left or right of the mouse touch pad if you dremel the case ?
this would be the absolutely perfect spot for me, scan my finger and slide it back to the mouse pad

I'm sure it would. It's just a matter of trimming away the right pieces at the right places. What attracted me to this one was how it was clearly raised from the PCB. There should be no question about getting it to fit... I just may have to swab my finger horizontal relative to the case vs vertical.
Not sure what I'll do with the extra gb of storage... perhaps allocate it to a directory... appdata seems appropriate.

I picked this one up off of Ebay really inexpensively I might add. ![]()

Has some very impressive specs...
Key Features:
# Memory Type: Solid State Portable Storage (Top Grade NAND Flash Memory)
# Encryption: Yes
# Fingerprint Sensor: Semiconductor Sensor
# Sensor Resolution: 508 DPI
# Field Size: 236 x 192 Pixels
# Gray Level: 265 levels (8 bits/pixel)
# False Rejection Rate: 1/1000
# False Acceptance Rate: 1/1,000,000
# Allowable Rotation: +/-15º
# Scanning Speed: 1 sec
# Matching Speed: <10ms
# Write Cycles: 1,000,000
# Data Retention: 10 yrs
# High Speed USB2.0 Interface
# Optional password recovery
# User friendly setup
# Software is preloaded and ready to go out of the box
# Can be used on any user level. You don't have to be the Administrator on the PC to use it
# The security application runs entirely from the Bio Drive so you never have to install software on any computer
Though it looks large I'm pretty sure it's just the casing. It is a dedicated device bio~scanner so only protects the drive. I'm going to see if I can either find a software app. or perhaps even figure out how it's hooked up to the onboard 1GB & see if I can find a way to integrate it into the eeePC as a whole.
If not, I may still do a "built in" mod with it & use it as designed. We'll see
Thanks for the replies on my question about different devices guys, much appreciated!
I'm wondering who'll be the 1st with this mod & tutorial?
It is definitely an intriguing one!
