Hey,
I just got my eee pc yesterday and have started to add some apps via synaptics.
I'm fairly new to using linux, and thus far have only installed Gimp, Bluefish and Anjuta for university.
What other apps has everyone installed? Any you would suggest for a new computing student?
Michael

I use my EEE mostly as a word processing/translation tool, with some other basic office-type duties thrown in.
To that end, I've got the whole OO.o suite with some language related add-ons, OpenProj, Heartsome Suite (a TMX/TBX/XLIF manager), Crossover Office, Scribus, as well as internet stuff suh as Thunderbird with Lightning/Provider plug-ins, XChat, gFTP, Gizmo Project, Frostwire and Azureus.
I'm sure I've got some other things, but those are the ones that come to mind right now.
R.

Other than switching it over to "advanced desktop" and adding some codecs to the Smplayer video software, I've left it pretty stock. I have installed a couple of extra games (lxDOOM and Cube).

This is quite surprising, was expecting people to have installed more

Well, to be fair, you've only got 2 responses so far. I think a lot of us have installed all sorts of stuff, but later realized that we just needed the basics and have stuck with them.

That's more-or-less the case with me, I must say.
In fact, other than installing kicker and ksmserver (to enable Full Desktop mode) the only things that I have installed outside of the stock apps currently are gaming-related - namely; Snes9x, FCEU, Generator, DOSBox, pSX, robotfindskitten, and ninvaders. ![]()

As per my 'signature' - but I'm not a computing student, poetofzwan. Nor a hardcore gamer or Linux geek.
'In the fullness of time' I may include more, but once you're into Advanced Desktop, there's a lot of software available to you straight out of the box.

It's surprising how little you have to add really. Most common tools are already included. There's even a Palm sync program which is the last thing you'd expect. I probably install ~50 things on a windows desktop. In Linux:
Advanced desktop
GParted - maybe this comes pre-installed, I forget.
GIMP
Nicotine (a slsk client)
Azureus
VLC
AirSnort
Wireshark
LMMS - probably as close as I'll get to Fruityloops in Linux.
Gkrellm - system monitoring

advanced desktop
gimp
audacity
VLC player
zsnes
WINE (which doesn't seem to work)
azureus
XMMS
beryl

Selection16, did you have any trouble with LMMS? My system freezes on the LMMS logo when I try to boot it up.
I installed the advanced desktop
octave
zsnes
LMMS - then stopped due to LMMS frustration

No it installs and runs quite well really, on the default os (advanced). I installed it in a terminal using apt-get.

If you already had a USB GPS, don't forget gpsdrive. Instructions on the wiki. I'm quite impressed for it to be a free product. I just need to work on getting the maps downloaded....
But my #1 must-have is VLC. Nice not worrying with codecs as well as being able to stream and remote control with the web interface. Simple apt-get and it just _works_.

I haven't installed anything-- running on the original Easy Mode since Christmas with the presinstalled software and perfectly happy with the whole setup.
Except now I'm thinking about installing AbiWord for note taking, writing for web publishing, etc.

I kept Xandros for a while, then became rather frustrated by it.
Since installing WinXP, my EEE has become much more than a simple web browser/simple Office apps editor.
I have installed:
Filemaker Pro 8.5
MYOB
POSE (Palm Emulator for my PDA)
MAME
WinRAR
Office 2003
GPS maps and software (Destinator)
Foxit Reader
HanDBase desktop viewer
and essentials for the EEE with XP:
CCleaner
MoveME
VLC
MediaPlayer Classic
Offline
Advance Desktop
VLC (media player)
GIMP (image manipulation)
Blender (3d modelling)
g++/gcc
gawk (text procesing)
flex (lexical anayser)
yacc (compiler creater)
stellarium (virtual planetarium) - dont really like kstars
LBreakout2 (breakout) - for the lunch hour
I graduated from uni with a CS degree about 6 years ago and am now a software engineer
