After several attempts to install xubuntu to a 2G surf, I'm about fed up.
FIrst, I cratered a 4GB SD card, then I got a 2GB SD card to run the live disk.
However, all attempts to set up a installation on the 2GB internal drive result in a fatal GRUB error.
Help!!!!

As far as I can tell, the eeeXubuntu install is too big for the 2gig internal SSD found on the 2G surf. I tried several times before giving up and installing the entire OS on a 4gig SDHC card that I have permanently in the slot.
One thing I tried without success was installing most of the OS on the internal drive and then mounting certain folders such as /home on the SDHC card.
So, to recap: eeeXubuntu won't install on a 2gig drive in it's current form (release 3, I think). Try a larger SD card.

Absolutely not true. I have it installed on my 2gig drive. However you must choose a manual when it comes to partitioning and make sure it does not try to create that 500 mb swap partition. Either delete it or put one on your SD card if you'd like.
For a long time I was running it only on the 2gb drive, but running out of space drove me crazy, so I reinstalled with the SD card mount point as /usr
Let me know if this works for you

Sorry, it didn't work...
I'm not having a whole lot of luck with all this. ![]()

What happened when you tried selecting the partitions manually?

it proceeded to install until it got to 122% then the install crashed, apparently, it never gave an error.
I restarted and got an error 15.

try it without localization. it worked with my 2g surf. you will have enough space to install language packs after installation.

I tried to install eeeXubuntu to an external hard drive, but it mucked up grub, so I can't boot into the original linux any more and nor can I boot into the external hard drive (except that it was also effectively acting as the liveCD, and I can boot that if I set it all up correctly) I can use another computer with kubuntu (but no internet access) to modify the external drive. Again, I'm on a 2G surf.
I'm planning to reinstall eeeXubuntu on the hard drive using the live image but with the ssd turned off in bios

I had a fatal grub error when i tired to install eeexubuntu on my 4g. What fixed it for me was not connecting to the internet while installing. Installing eeexubuntu on my int ssd. then after the instillation

Go into Synaptic and look at the repositories. There should be a tab for updates. I bet those are unchecked. Check those and then it will find updates.
I have no idea why i got the grub error installing connected to the internet, and why updating afterwards didnt work...all i know is thats how i stopped it...out of pure luck to be honest.

Well, it's now quite thoroughly not working, having now wiped both ssd and external hard drive, and getting no joy (thank goodness all my work was on an SD card!), I need to check I was using a good version of the eeeXubuntu CD, as my desktop mucked up burning the first time. Wish me luck. If there's another OS you'd recommend instead, I could be eternally grateful...... my machine is quite broken, somehow.

Another option is to run eeeXubuntu off an SDHC card which is what I am doing. Takes a little while to boot but once it is up it runs just fine. I even have compiz fusion running on it. Works great! I left the default xandros install on the ssd and I can select either via grub at boot time.

Hi Seabear,
I am running eeeXubuntu on my 2G. And it works just fine.
This is how to do it:
You need a 2G SD card (or bigger size if you prefer more space), that you put into the computer. This card has to stay there permanently.
1. Insert you eeeXubuntu CD and start up.
2. When the OS has started up, make sure that network is working. Try and surf or so. If it does not work, then go to the Network Manager and enable it so it works.
3. Start the installation program.
4. Choose "No localization" in the first screen. This is important, since it else will fill up with a lot of language support. Click "Next".
5. When you get to choosing a partition for the install, you have to choose "Manuel".
6. Under partitioning make the following partitions:
A ext3 partition on the SSD internal harddrive. Mount it as "/". This is done by editing the newly made partition. Use all the space for this partition.
A swap partition on the SD card and set it to 256 MB. This can not be mounted.
A ext3 partition on the SD card, using the rest of the space available. Mount it as "/usr".
7. Continue the rest of the installation as you normally would.
The system should install without problems. You can add your local language support, OpenOffice etc. after the installation.
Hope it help you ;-)

THANK YOU! After hours of frustration I discovered this post. It worked like a champ. My limited budget forced me to buy the 2gb Surf. Your installation notes were very helpful. We need to get this added to the Wiki so the 2gb people can get this installed.
Thanks!

I can confirm. I did a manual partition, assigning the full 1998Mb of sda to root, creating a swap on one half of a 1Gb SD card (sdb) and locating /home on the other half, and Xubuntu installed perfectly.

this is great i will be trying this very soon and will let you know if it worked for me thanks

ps. I hope others find your post and find it as easy to use as i did

Just to add I also installed it entirely on the SSD (2G surf) with no SD card. I later went back to the default Xandros but the eeeXubuntu install worked fine.

Shenphen: your post may have just saved the life of my 2G Surf! I've been agonizing over Xubuntu on this darn thing for the past two days. I can't wait to try this.
I looked for information of this type for over an hour before finding this. This information should be stickied (ATTN: 2G Surf users!) and this information should be put in the Wiki.
I also hope it isn't too much to have faith that the maintainer of EEEXubuntu will slim and trim down things further with us 2G users in mind...

I predict a very short life for that SD card. The great majority of SD cards are made with MLC flash - 5000 to 10.000 writes.

I attempted to follow these steps and the installer always just quits out. Perhaps my SD card is too small? It's only 512 mb, and when I attempt to create a 256 mb partition it always comes up as 254 mb. Any suggestions? Would like larger card work better?

I got it installing on a 2GB surf without an sd card. Make sure you select no localisation instead of a country and just have one big partition of the full drive and no swap.

I am trying to install eeexubuntu again on just the SD card, I have had loads of problems with FSCK checks all the time when I have spread it across the ssd and sd
The setup I wanted was SSD: / , SDCH(16GB) 4gb/usr 12gb/home
But just cannot get there without these fsck errors, any ideas or best config
Thanks
update - just installed all to usb device, still keep getting the fsck filesystem error could it be the /home folder?

Delanthear -- I've tried that as well -- the installed just quits out without any error message.

I've done the same thing. There must be something else going on.
No Localisation, No Swap, 1 partition. It fits fine.

After further inspection, I did get a bit further, and learned a couple of other things:
If I try it again properly and format the 2g internal flash drive, it gets up to about 120% and fails out. Mind you, this is with with localizations turned off. If I attempt to use my 512 mb SD card for /usr it fails earlier, and if I check the SD card afterwards, it says there is 0 free space. Was everyone trying eeexubuntu release three when they tried this?
