Sprint EVDO-RevA USB U720

Ok, After playing around with the eee pc, this was the thing I most needed.

I needed my EVDO revA broadband Sprint connection to work.

I started out acknowledging that Xandros is a debian derivative and Ubuntu also, so maybe I could just use the ubuntu way (the eee pc already has the correct kernel for revA support)

I thought I'd follow the magnificent guide from http://samat.org/weblog/20070128-sprint … linux.html and take it from there, but there was also much distraction as I was in the barnes & noble sipping coffee and cheking out some .... books.

Anyway, this is "Sprint EVDO RevA Quick&Dirty"
1. Installed the start menu so I could access the terminal and other stuff easy.
2. open up a terminaland type "sudo XandrosFileManager"
3  Look inside the View Menu, tick "Show Hidden Files" and "Show All File Systems"
3. In "All File Systems" go to "etc/ppp/peers/" I could not find a create file in the menu (remember I am reading books) so I just copied an existing script, renamed it to "sprint" and overwrote its content as per samat.org.

4. In "All File Systems" go to "etc/chatscripts/" I could not find a create file in the menu so I just copied an existing script, renamed it to "sprint-connect" and overwrote its content as per samat.org.

5. In "All File Systems" go to "etc/chatscripts/" I could not find a create file in the menu so I just copied an existing script, renamed it to "sprint-disconnect" and overwrote its content as per samat.org.

6. Inserted my Sprint U720 usb wireless broadband EVDO:A dongle.
7. Test in the terminal with "sudo pon sprint"
(In the pic you can see that I did it without inserting the U720 at first)
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2126/1836583836_1bd45a00b6.jpg?v=0
...and surprise surprise, it worked.

Of course you could sudo to the editor directly, but I was multitasking.

When you want to close down the dongle do a "sudo poff sprint" in the terminal and that will switch it off.

Thats it for now, But this is how I set up my wireless broadband in 15 minutes.

And yes I made the screenshots, did the flickr thing and this with the eee pc.
This is a great device.

Re: Sprint EVDO-RevA USB U720

You are my hero.  I don't actually own a Sprint connection card, but I have easy access to several and planned on spending the day trying to get one working.  For me it was just an interesting little project, but I know several people that will be very happy to know it can be done.  Cheers.

Re: Sprint EVDO-RevA USB U720

Excuse my ignorance, but can any Sprint data plan owner use an EVDO card for their plan?  Or is it a separate deal completely?

A connection card is it's own line of service.  Think of it as adding another cell phone to your account.

Re: Sprint EVDO-RevA USB U720

Would you be willing to post the scripts you created so a total novice could just copy them and paste them to the right place on the eee pc.  That would make this project possible for a total novice like me.

bobby_1290,

I noticed, too, that there is no way to create a file in the root directory using the standard file manager. This was really annoying me  However, I found a way to do this by running the file manager with Administrator privileges. For future reference:

1. Call up the terminal with CTR + ALT + T
2. Type "konquerer", which calls up a web browser interface that allows you to explore applications on your computer
3. Navigate to the File Manager (Administrator) by double clicking on the following icons:
Applications - Applications - System - Administrator Tools - File Manager

With this file manager open, you can make changes to the root directory, including copying or creating new files and folders.

Re: Sprint EVDO-RevA USB U720

I was hoping to use the U727 with this method.   I'm running into an issue and I'm hoping someone more linux savy can help..

The U727 has a flash drive in it and that mounts just fine, I can see the files, etc..     The problem it never mounts the usb to serial part of the device so I cannot access the modem side.

Anyone have any suggestions on where to start with this one?   If anyone is in nyc and wants to hang out with the U727 and make it work, I'll be happy to meet you at some starbucks or bar for a few hours.

Re: Sprint EVDO-RevA USB U720

I have the same issue as Accident. I'm trying to get the Audiovox 6700 pocketPC to pickup as a modem through USB.  Heck I would even buy a BLUETOOTH dongle if I thought that would make it work.  As it stands I'm thinking about booting with Windows Xp and setting it up that way.

I'm thinking about going over to XP for the same reason. I have not been able to get the EEE to connect to my Treo. But, I'm new to linux.

Re: Sprint EVDO-RevA USB U720

Seeing that the u720 works I assume that the u727 should work with little tweaking.

@accident:
The problem is that the (newest) devices/features may not be defined/supported(by default) in all but the newest kernels, so you would have to modprobe to get the device id's and take it from there. Another workaround is to get the device id's from the windows installs. See the guide I referred to in my first post for the modprobing etc.

@u727 users: I've seen that sprint has a linux guide for u72x users, I haven't looked into it (as I do not need it yet!) but make sure that you've covered all bases.

edit add modprobe
For modprobing the u720 see http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-366229.html
what I think you would need is the product id of the u727 and then test which usb device is the evdo modem.

Re: Sprint EVDO-RevA USB U720

To answer myself;

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

airprime.c needs this addition to recognize Novatel U727 USB EVDO modem:

{ USB_DEVICE(0x1410, 0x4100) }, /* Novatel Wireless U727 */

Shouldn't this device be added to the wiki list of supported devices?

Re: Sprint EVDO-RevA USB U720

You could also try "sudo pon cdma" (with both the u720/u727)

I know it works with my u720, but does not give full EVDO revA speed.

Let me check... ok, it may be that you can change the cdma script to use a higher speed (921600), as it now uses a low speed setting(115200).

[edit]
I still think you'll need to make the device known to the kernel as stated in prior posts, however I do not have a u727, so I can't help you there.

Re: Sprint EVDO-RevA USB U720

Is anyone using the u727 Under Linux and gotten the GPS part working?  I'm looking to pick up this card, and having EVDO and GPS would be killing two birds with one stone. or i guess 3 if you consider the micro SD reader.

-Thanks.

Re: Sprint EVDO-RevA USB U720

I would just like to get my Sprint PC 6700 to work "phone as modem."  I am not a geek and don't understand half of what is being said here.  Isn't there something simple out there that can just be run on my eee pc to make it connect?  Otherwise, I find I might have to install XP and I really don't want to do that.  I recent being so Windows dependent.

Re: Sprint EVDO-RevA USB U720

helpme2, I have the same phone and network.   So far i picked up the mini Cirago bluetooth adapter and got that running to the point where it recognizes my phone.  I am having trouble getting it to pair and find info on a CDMA connection.  Does anyone else have any info on a sprint connection?

Hi all,
Will these instructions work on an EEE natively running Xandros in advanced desktop mode?
Thank you,

Re: Sprint EVDO-RevA USB U720

Thanks for all the great posts.  I followed all of the above instructions however the eee does not see to recognize the U727.

bobby stated:  To answer myself;

{ USB_DEVICE(0x1410, 0x4100) }, /* Novatel Wireless U727 */

Where do I add this line?  To what file? How do I make the device known to the kernel?  The instructions that Sprint gave to setup the aircards with linux computers are for Ubuntu and calls for downloading KPPP and KPPP dialer through the add/remove applications.  KPPP comes with Ubuntu I believe, it doesn't with xandros.  It would have to be downloaded from another unknown source.

Re: Sprint EVDO-RevA USB U720

Hi all,
I have copied the scripts to the T and placed them into their respective folders. I then plug in my usb modem (sierra AC585U) and open up terminal and type "sudo pon sprint" but nothing happens. Help please? I am so close!

Btw, is it a space or a tab between visible spaces in the scripts?

Thank you,
Michelle
