and another battery indicator ...

Power Meter Plus provides a detailed battery meter which is always present on your desktop. The meter is partially transparent, so you can see through it.

    * It gradually appears as the power levels drop. The lower the power, the more prominent the meter will be
    * When you’re charging the laptop it’ll turn green and slowly disappear/fade as the charge increases
    * The meter appears either on the bottom left or bottom right of the screen; it moves to the opposite corner if you move your mouse over it

WinWorkBar, if you need a free, straightforward, easy-access calendar and task managing app without having to install things like Yahoo Widgets, Google Gadgets, or Rainlendar.

Here it is on my desktop: http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i83/sulkyme/winworkbar.png

And here's the Lifehacker review for it: http://lifehacker.com/5104269/winworkba … td-sidebar. It can be autohidden, btw.

And here's where to download it: http://vetch.magot.pl/pages/software.html. It's the second item on the list.

Microsoft Calculator Plus is a window-based scientific calculator PLUS a lot more... all of the standard functions such as Tangient, sine, cosine, arcsine, arccosine, arctangent, etc... Calculator plus is also a conversion utility. Convert lengths and distances, temperature, speed, volume, weight, time, area, power, density, force... even convert decimal values into fractions. Calculator plus also has a handy precision setting so you can automatically round your equation values to the nearest specified decimal places, or round your fraction values to the nearest fractional value specified.

tip: once installed, you can use the executable as a stand-alone program, you may rename it to calc.exe and copy to %systemroot%\system32, replacing the old windows calculator.

Re: Must have Utilities for WinXP on Eee?

Wippien is a free, open source Remote Control / VNC program

You will be assigned an IP address to enjoy full network services with your friends - just as they would be sitting next to you. No special setup is needed to establish connection. Wippien uses NAT traversal techniques to penetrate NAT devices and make direct connections between peers. You can access your friends' shares, printers, services, desktop, even ping them through IP you see next to their name.
Wippien uses popular WeOnlyDo wodVPN component to establish P2P between peers, and then simply redirects all traffic from Virtual Network Adapter through wodVPN to remote side.

http://i.d.com.com/i/dl/media/dlimage/69/61/8/69618_large.jpeg

but Wippien is more than just that: with this fully featured IM Client you can exchange messages and files, have visual and audio notifications on new events, change its appearance - all in one product! it can connect to ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, AIM, Jabber, Google Talk and many other protocols.

I have used both.  WinWorkBar is simpler, prettier but with less options and is light on the system resources.  While Rainlander has many more options, is jazzier looking but is heavy on the system resources.

I tried both and am sticking to Rainlander.

CoachWade, what burzin said sums it up pretty well:

burzin wrote:

And to back that up, here's a screenshot:

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i83/sulkyme/rainlendarvswinworkbar.png

As you can see, WinWorkBar practically uses only half the memory Rainlendar does. It's still a matter of personal preference, though. Since I don't mind sacrificing customization for lower memory usage, I like WinWorkBar.  Depends on you if you want shiny graphics or speed. big_smile

Thanks Twiist and Burzin. That was exactly the sort of comparison I was hoping to get! Very much appreciated!

I think I'll stick with Rainlendar for the time being. (I sure like me some shiny graphics!) Thanks to the other useful apps talked about here my Asus is running more gooder now than when it came out of the box, so I have a few system resources to spare and Rainy is just so darn useful.

Thanks for the observations!

Re: Must have Utilities for WinXP on Eee?

Caveat: I have not personally tried this piece of software, but it looks promising.

http://www.vistastartmenu.com/index.html

Although it says 'Vista,' the software description specifically mentions that it works with XP.

From the product web page:
-----
Vista Start Menu is the convenient alternative to the plain Start menu you find in Windows XP and Windows Vista. The program uses your cognitive abilities (visual memory, reflexes, etc.); however, while it is easily understandable for beginners, it is also highly efficient for experienced users.

Go ahead and try replacing your Start menu right now! It is safe because Vista Start Menu does not change your system settings, thus making it easy to install, as well as simple to remove.
-----

Hope this makes someone's day easier!
