Century22 has summarised the list of apps mentioned in this thread in this post
OK, we know all about the Virus and Spywares:
McAfee (or whatever)
Windows Cleanup! (must have!)
Adaware
Spybot
SpySweeper (maybe)
And the usual Suspects:
TweakUI
WinZip
Adobe
Quicktime (maybe)
But what about Eee specific utilities??
So far I have:
MoveMe (shuffles clipped windows back onto screen)
eeeClock (overclocks obviously)
So what am I missing that I really NEED to have?
I'm dying to know. ;-)

I really like the following:
Launchy (version 1.4, NOT 2.0) - I ended up uninstalling Launchy.

RK Launcher

WinMover (ALT+drag in Windows)

Treesize Free

USB Disk Ejector

EEE Specific
---------------------------
EEEPC Cam Tray

And I plan on moving my TEMP/TMP folders to a RAMDISK later on tonight:

VLC media player, light on resources, plays everything with built-in codecs.

Hum, I'm not sure why you would need all those launchers? Just drop an icon on the desktop and be done with it. WinMover seems to do the same thing as MoveMe, so I'm good there. I do have Treesize and probably just forgot to mention it cause the name is so Stupid. And I have the Surf model so no Cam software will be necessary.
Much thanks tho for the USBDisk Eject and the Ramdisk ideas, very nice. I'll probably hold off on the Ramdisk until I get my 2GB card but I love the idea of a Blackhole drive workspace, things go in but they do NOT come out.

Oh sure, I have VLC, I guess in my thats more of an App than a Util. I mean, I didn't list OpenOffice or Firefox either, in case you're not into that whole brevity thing. ;-)

7zip instead of winzip or winrar

"All those launchers"? There's only two and they behave very differently from each other. Also, I can't decide between them...
I also prefer to have a clean desktop. One might say spartan.

That might have been handy to know it the original post. It would have influenced my answer.

You're quite welcome. I find USBDisk Eject MUCH more useful than the native Windows eject function.
Something to keep in mind with the ramdrive TEMP space is that it can cause problems with installers that require reboots to finish. I haven't run into too many of those and I can't think of any other drawbacks, though I'm far

eeectl (overclocking, fan control and temp monitor) and moveme (working with oversized windows on the eee). check my signature (pg 11 on the eeectl thread for the updated version).

I use one launcher, Launchy. Sure, you could drop an icon on the desktop. Launchy, though, makes it easy to just use the keyboard, not the trackpad, to launch apps. Much as I like my Eee, I find it easier to launch apps with the keyboard.

My must have is unusual: Microsoft Keyboard Driver (IntelliType Pro)
Why? Because by switching to XP, we have lost the Caps Lock and Num Lock indicator in the notification bar.
Microsoft IntelliType driver doesn't keep the key status in there permanently, but it will give you an onscreen visual feedback just like the other fn keys. Asus should have thought of that at the beginning.
You can download it from here:

MediaPlayer classic is the player of choice for me. I prefer it over VLC because of the familiar interface, It's tiny and can handle anything you throw at it provided you've got the proper codec installed.

You may also want to look into codec packs like klite which include media player classic and will install all the codecs you will ever need to view any file including quicktime and realplayer without having to install the bloatware.
klite codec pack:

Zoom Player is another good DirectShow front end. It has a good tool to help you manage filters, detecting missing decoders and then download the latest version.

ProcessTamer

I'll just list rather than add the URLs as they can be found easily in google:
MPlayer Classic
ScummVM
CCleaner
Stardock
Rainmeter
TweakUI
PortableApps suite
TreeSize Free
StyleXP (set custom boot screen and theme, then unloaded)
Other essentials, search this forum
R2H graphics driver
EEEPC_RES
Hitachi driver (so Rainmeter can 'see' and report on SDHC)
SetFSB (created two batch files, one to overclock and one to return and added to Stardock)
Edit: Just changed SetFSB for eeectl. Don't overclock much but I like the fan control. Good work!

No anti-virus and no spyware program because a little common sense goes a long way.
ACDSee32
CCleaner
Evil Player
FlashFXP
Foxit Reader
Mozilla Firefox
Mozilla Thunderbird
Pidgin
Startup Monitor
Startup Control Panel
TextPad
uTorrent
Ventrilo
VLC for extra volume in movies
WinRAR
I may add ZoneAlarm.

I'll stick with the desktop icons, they work just fine and don't take up any additional memory.
Process Tamer sounds interting, I will be testing that shortly. Do you really have to login and download a Free License Key? I would really rather not.
My issue with USB Disk Ejector is it doesn't stay in the Sys Tray, it's either a Window or closed. I would really prefer an easy to click trey icon that is easier to read and deal with than the basic Windows one. I'll probably remove this as it's not really adding anything.
A few people have recommended 7zip, which looks good if I were making Zips... but I'm not. I just need something to open them when they come my way. I suppose if it's significantly smaller or has fewer nag screens, that might be OK. Just not sure it's worth the effort at this point, thoughts?
I must be one of the lucky ones with a really quiet fan, it doesn't bother me at all so I intend to leave it alone.
Common sense vs. Every Hacker/Spammer on the internet?? No thanks. I work on PCs for a living and I see those Common Sense machines every day... in the SHOP getting fixed!
Thanks for all the suggestions guys! You have given us all something to think about.

Some of my favourite free apps are:
EditPad Lite - better than notepad for text editing
http://www.editpadpro.com/editpadlite.html
Izarc - about the best compression app I have come across so far
http://www.izarc.org/
iI System Wiper - nice little cleanup app
http://iisoftware.net/
Ice Mirror - an excellent file mirroring tool - use with care - also works well for cloning SD cards (done it twice with no hitches

If you're running apps off your card reader, here's something to make your life a little easier - especially if you remove the thing a lot.
http://pegtop.net/start/
PStart is a nice little customizable menu app. The installer allows you to define a thumb drive as the destination, whereupon it acts like a portable application. Using PStart is similar to using the winDOS start menu - just drag and drop apps into it.
For best results, make the PStart.exe run on insert with autorun.inf.
Offline
Mobilemeter - real-time temp monitoring on your desktop http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Sys … eter.shtml
Clock! - free customizable analog clock (mine is set to transparent, always on top) http://www.gljakal.com
Offline
Clock! is pretty cool. I just can't decide on placement. If I put it on the left hand side it interferes with my icons, if I put it on the right hand side it disappears off the screen when I switch from my plugged in flat panel to the eee screen. If I right hand it on the eee it interferes with my desktop picture when viewed on my flat panel. I may have to skip it just because I get tired of bouncing it around.
OR, I may go ahead with right hand side and let it disappear on the smaller eee screen. That way it's there when I have the extra desktop but hidden when I don't.

Maybe common sense was a poor term. Experience maybe? I've worked in a computer shop and I've worked in IT for a municipality. Computers have been a daily hobby for me since I was 13.
I don't use IE, Outlook, or Office. My friends don't e-mail me "cute" EXEs. I'm not fooled by Comet Cursor or a super-amazing search bar. I don't download software from here and there. Most of my apps are older versions that I've used for years and are stored on my desktop hard drive.
I create a computing environment that just doesn't play host to the even the likelihood of infection. I haven't had a virus since my DOS days.
But it's your Eee and by all means feel free to install whatever you'd like.

OK, I have deleted this response 3 times because they were all way too harsh, but I have to say... you should back away from this.
Are you actually saying that you alone have mastered the Internet and the rest of us are just monkeys clicking on random unknown .exe's cause we are too lame to know better?? Come on. Does your "safe environment" include even the smallest corner of the internet?
Visiting any web page can bag you some spyware and I'm not talking about just the Porn. Firefox is not a secret weapon anymore and nothing is 100% bulletproof. Yes, as always, abstinence is the best policy but if we are going to use the internet, like we are... NOW, we need to practice safe Surf!
So can we just get back to the Utilities plz?

CodeMonkey,
I would remove McAfee from your list and put something like AVG, Avast or Kaperski as these are far smaller to run and something like McAfee or Norton are almost as bad as the virii they are supposed to protect you from.
