Hi there,
first time poster here \o/
First of all let me tell you that you guys rox and this forum is just awesome.
Now about the poll, the thing is im buying a 1008ha, and probably like lots of others users, the memory upgrade procedure just scares me a lot.
See i just browsed a lot of topics and read a lot about the memory upgrade, but i was unable to reach any solid conclusions, and it just gave me fear of bricking my netbook.
With this poll i intend to answer just one simple question: is it true or not that the main cause of so many dead eee pcs on the upgrade is the fact of leaving SW2 on?
If you think this is useful, please contribute, if you think its useless, just ignore it.
That was it, btw, sorry for my english XD
see ya

It's not that scary if you're careful. Wear rubber gloves!

Advice from somebody who bricked their netbook:
Don't be afraid of ripping it apart, but make sure to take your time, read through as many tutorials as possible, and turn off SW2! The absolute worst thing you could do, is send your netbook back to Asus for repair after you bricked it. Mine came back to me in rather bad shape ...
Upgrading the ram is worth the effort and stress, but as said above, wear gloves, and turn off SW2.
My only other advice is to really be careful with the clips holding the keyboard trey to the under chassis/shell. They break very easily, but it is possible to take it apart with out breaking the clips off. If you break some or all of them off, don't worry, the netbook still holds together rather well.
Good luck ![]()

im still scared to do it. no matter how many times people tell me its not that hard im still convinced i will wreck it. the plastic clips freak me out.

i broke all but a few clips and it holds together fine. there is a minor gap in front but it's negligible. while it was open, i fixed my touchpad buttons too. for some reason my left one didn't "click" like my right one. so i put some padding under it and it has a firmer click now.
just remember to unscrew the bottom 4 screws before you try to pry the top from the bottom. i forgot and thta's why a few of the clips broke. i used a guitar pick to pry and to unclip the top of the keyboard. i used to some double sided tape to fix the gaps and now it's fine.

i popped my 1008 appart some 5 times already... never used gloves but always turned the switch off. I don´t know what plastic clips u guys are talking about.... the only "problem" I have is that every time I open it, those metal clips that hold the top of the keyboard get bent and don´t lock the kb anymore. So every time I open it, I have to remember to push them back to place from the bottom side of the top side of the case.... twice I forgot to turn the switch back on and had to take it apart just to turn it on!!! I know you just need to remove the kb to turn it on, but if you read my post you will understand why I had to take it apart just to turn the switch back on!

yeah i opened mine like a bunch of times now. once or twice because i forgot to turn the switch back on. rodrigo, we're talking about the clips along the edges that keep the top and the bottom tight.

^^ thanks for the clarification. I never had a problem with those. I use a creditcard to split it open. Just slide it.... pops open easily... need a bit more force close to the touchpad and below the screen.

I just had it die. Then came here to find all the posts on "1008HA memory upgrade dead" ![]()
Well, it should have been obvious to me: Leaving the battery connected while removing electronic parts is never a good idea.
One little clarification I'd like to make, though: My unit's SW2 switch was always in the "0" position, I believe, all the time I used the unit. The 0 is on the right, 1 on the left side of the switch. Is that normal?

Try looking at it from the other side. ![]()
If it was assembled in Australia it might even look upside down... ![]()

I got my 1008HA two days ago and figured I'd wait a bit before ripping it apart..
But today, I couldnt wait any longer ![]()
I did turn the switch off and I also disconnected the battery before touching the memory.
Used a 2 gig (duh) Kingston PC2-5300 stick and it works great ![]()
And it's cause of this thread that I got to know about the switch. Thanks!
I'm bitten by the mini-pc/netbook bug now, I want more toys! ![]()

Hey, I didn't even find out about the switch until long after performing the swap, but it went fine. I did remove the battery before touching the boards. I was using a 2gb Kingston piece.

Don't bother upgrading. I run WIN7 Ultimate, I've only ever seen it draw more than 1 Gb RAM twice. it will always bottleneck on CPU processing before the RAM is an issue.
It is not easy to do, Keyboard edge connector anyone? I've built almost a dozen PCs and am comfortable inside a computer, and I found it nerve racking. The credit card tip helps a lot, but it is designed to be cheap to produce, even standard mounts are obviously not going to take constant fiddling with.
WIN7 Build tips - Don't install all Asus components, It doubles boot time. All I do now, is mobo driver and hotkeys. Let MS Update do the rest. I've seen it idle at less than 500Mb RAM used.
I've said it other posts, I cracked Open the Seashell and upgraded to 2Gb. the guide I saw didn't mention SW2 at all, and I never noticed it.
Obviously you have to disconnect power before changing components, I removed the battery simply to get easier access.
