I'm trying to get an impression of how many people are having problems. This is for a short article I'm writing but I won't be naming anyone, this is purely for stats.
I've included the option to say that you removed Xandros; but if you did so because of specific problems included in the poll, it would still be helpful if you ticked those boxes.
Many thanks
Tim

I voted shutdown, but that seems to have gone away when I removed the BIOS password with the latest 13xx version. I have it dual booting to Ubuntu 8.04 and that seems fine.

Works fine, but my wireless is open; haven't tried it with WPA, and WEP might as well be open anyway.
Bluetooth didn't work the first time I tried it ('For some reason, please restart AzureBT again !!' or something), but is fine now. I never changed a thing. Mysterious.

Out of the box, everything worked, including WiFi (much better than 900).
Now only "emergency shutdown" to turn off.
Will install XP ASAP.

I'm interested that most of you say updates are OK - are the repositories fixed now?

This is great; thanks for all the responses; more welcome :-)
Only 1 so far says all OK.

I got my Eee 901 yesterday, 20GB version with Xandros Linux. I was really looking forward to it, but can't believe how disappointing it was.
I turned it on, filled in my name, etc. After it had booted up for the first time, I immediately shut it down to see how quickly it boots up normally. I was left with a black screen and a blinking cursor at the top left. It didn't turn itself off.
Quite literally straight out of the box, and it failed to shutdown. What a load of rubbish.
Later on, I put it all back in the box so I could carry it home. Two hours later, I discovered that once again it had failed to shut down properly and was roasting hot after being left in the box.
I then updated the BIOS to the latest version. It still doesn't shut down properly all of the time.
Then I found that the update mechanism didn't work at all.
I'm surprised to say that Windows XP looks like a much more attractive alternative. At least it can shut the computer down properly and update itself without having to edit peculiar text files!

I have the same issue plus non working wifi. The shut down problem needs to be sorted ASAP as that could be deemed a fire risk if the unit is assumed to be off and put inside a suitcase or whatever. Portability is afterall why the eee pc series was developed.
Asus need to sort this out ASAP before something nasty happens.

I wonder if the real reason the Linux version of the EEE 901 wasn't available until a while after the XP version was 'cos they were late getting the OS sorted (and still rushed it, given all these issues).
I can't see how they're going to sort the apt-get update space issue short of either regressing a load of the package updates from the repository (can't see that happening, and it would be dumb anyway) or coming up with a script that batches the updates so you don't get all the debs on at the same time. Whilst the unionfs root idea is nice in theory, given people will hopefully need to do a restore very infrequently I think they'd be better off including a system restore USB pendrive or SD card in the box* and just not bothering with unionfs.
* 2gb would be enough to have a compressed partition image plus a barebones kernel and scripts to restore the state of sda using it - wouldn't be fast to run, but would work, or 4gb for an uncompressed version which they could even supply a script with so if your EEE has an internet connection you can update the restore image so it doesn't regress package updates to restore (script would do a chroot and apt-get update/upgrade in the chroot, although perhaps risky as it could leave the restore usb pendrive in a hosed state)

My updates are not working correctly. Not even via the synaptic terminal. Keeps saying repository error, can't download etc etc...

Quite right. After shutting down Xandros on my Eee 901 and the screen going black, I assumed it had actually shut down. I put it back in its box, which is a nice flammable combination of cardboard, paper and foam.
Two hours later, I notice there's a strange whirring sound coming from the box. This was the system fan going bonkers, helpfully pumping the hot air back to where it would go and get hot again.
I didn't expect to buy a brand new laptop that turns out to have an inherent fault and try to set fire to my house within the first day of ownership.
Surely Asus knew about this fault before sending them out to shops. And if not, then that's probably even more worrying...
Is this enough of a problem to go and get my money back? Asus don't seem to be leaping up and fixing it in a hurry.

I have the same shutdown issues. I'm wondering if the shutdown issue is network related? I've been turning off my wifi every time I shutdown now and haven't had a hang since. (mind you, I've not been using the eee for long periods either)
Something to try?

I've had failed shutdowns and dodgy wifi connectivity ( I have to keep deleting and re-creating my wifi profile to get the inteface working or it simply fails on connect).
My shutdown issue hasnt happend since I rolled back my Bios from 1301 to 1001 this morning. Anyone else noticed this or is it coincidence?

Not sure if I am just lucky or that something else is different. I am in the Netherlands and bought my Eee PC 901 Linux in the UK. I have played with it today and so far everything appears to work. I did not make any changes to the default installation. Wired LAN with DHCP worked without any configuration needed. Wireless LAN worked flawlessly with WPA, both with DHCP or with fixed IP-address and also with the unprotected network of my neighbors. ![]()
This little machine shuts down cleanly every time. Because of the reported problems of shutdown hanging, I tried it many times, with wireless connected and without wireless connected. Never a problem.
There were two updates that both installed. "Touchpad Patch" downloaded and installed directly, "Asus Update System Update" needed a second attempt to download. Small problem: Although, as far as I could see, it successfully downloaded and installed at the second attempt, it is still noted as "Download failed". I did not yet install a BIOS update, not sure if it is wise to do that when everything seems to work.
Typed a letter, browsed the web, configured Thunderbird for my email account with secure (SSL) connections with POP and SMTP servers, changed the desktop theme to Sunset, set the touchpad sensitivity a little lower. The System feels responsive, keyboard is fine with 4-finger typing, the high touchpad sensitivity needs a little getting used to. After all the problems I read about here, I am relieved and very happy.

Don't bother. Seems that the problems are widespread and pretty random. I only have the update problem, and occasionally I lose my wifi to a WEP, but that's only happened about 3 times. I rarely shutdown my EEE PC, most times I just close the lid and it goes to standby. I only have to charge it every 2 or 3 days. I don't even carry the power supply anymore. In standby the fans aren't running, and I keep it in my ASUS bag which I also put into my regular bag. No heat and no problems there.
I just wish the update problem would be fixed. I'm also looking to install Firefox 3 to replace FF2 which is on there.

Man, thanks for this topic. I registered just to respond to this thread. The three issues I'm having are the system update fails (I can install software, even BIOS updates, but not system updates), no spellcheck for staroffice, and no file manager icon. All of them, according to "Tim" from the help email, can be magically fixed with F9, but that didn't even do anything. Oh, I have a 901. I understand that new tech is always iffy, but isn't the 901 more like an update to the 900 or 701 rather than brand-new stuff?

I posted shutdown and update being problems, but shutdown seems to have fixed itself.
With update I went straight to the command line and ran apt-get update and apt-get upgrade. One of the partitions filled itself completely and things have never been quite the same since.
Not that Xandros is going to last long, it's debian or ubuntu for me.

Not sure if this qualifies as an "out of the box" problem, but running in advanced desktop mode, StarOffice and OpenOffice both crash intolerably. The first time I open a file after a reboot it works fine, but trying to open anything else is an exercise in futility.
Looks like it's AbiWord and Gnumeric for now....

Similar issues here. Same shutdown problem at first but seems to be working lately. I did run the bios upgrade to 1301. Updates fail and the eee download site doesn't work. It downloads a CNR file but you can't do anything with it. What's the point of that.
I also noticed that if you change the color scheme you loose the file manager and a few other icons. That is just plain odd. I have reinstalled about 5 times because I kept losing the file manager and eee download icon and finally figured out that the only thing that makes it disappear is changing the color scheme to something other than default. This is a really cool computer and I actually like this xandros os (I was going to put ubuntu on but too many issues with that at the moment). However, these problems are unacceptable. If Asus can't fix them I'll return this as defective.
I tried calling tech support but they are clueless about their OS and seemed to have never heard of the eee download site (http://eeedownload.asus.com/) and couldn't offer any help on installing GIMP. I sure hope they fix these issues soon as my 30 days is up in about 3 weeks.

Exactly. It is hard to recover all the space too.
My solution was to reinstall the OS, then remove the Asus repositories from apt.

Just thought I'd mention that I installed XP on my Xandros 901 over the weekend and have had no problems whatsoever. I hate to say it, but installing windows seems to have turned my 901 into the machine I wanted it to be in the first place.
I really am gutted as I was determined to get to grips with linux, but the array of problems I was having (not shutting down cleanly, staroffice crashing, power button not working, updates not completing etc) I decided to bite the bullet and go with xp.
Damn you buggy Xandros! ![]()

so far so good with Xandros, but with ubuntu-eee 8.4.1 coming out I think I might switch, alot of small things that annoy me with Xandros ie. change of keyboard language which is instantly forgoten once you reboot.
Have been thinking of XP but can't really see any gain on using it with such a small computer as most of the entertainment factor is lost with its size.
