eee pc 900 "screen whine"

I noticed that a few others are having this issue, and I just wanted to see how bad a problem this.

I notice that when my screen is bright, there is a whine from the screen which is driving me nuts!  Unless this can be fixed, I'm going to have to return my 900 and go back to my trusty old 701, as this is a real pain when I'm using it in bed, and my missus is trying to sleep!

Re: eee pc 900 "screen whine"

Yep, I made the first topic on this whine. It makes it absolutely unusable in quiet environments (especially when your girlfriend is trying to sleep next to you). It is however completely unnoticeable in environments where I will be using the EEE most: in trains, wifi-enabled cafés, ...

I am still in doubt as to what I will do about the noice.

Is it only when on Max brightness?

Re: eee pc 900 "screen whine"

Is it from the screen or is it the fan whining?  The fan on mine sounds like an angry mosquito ;-)

Re: eee pc 900 "screen whine"

Yes, but I can only hear it if its really quiet (ie late at night and just me in the room). It disappears when brightness is down to around 20%.

Re: eee pc 900 "screen whine"

I have found that the whine can be attributed to the mic, if your using advanced mode, click on the volume control, then mixer, then preferences, tick all the mic boxes and then check that they are muted, see if this makes a difference.

Re: eee pc 900 "screen whine"

@Friko: It's at it's loudest when the screen is at full brightness, but it can also be heard when the screen is anything above 20-30% brightness.

@red_death: It's intensity seems to vary with the brightness of the screen, so I don't think it has anything to with the fan.  Besides it's source definitely seems to be the screen area.

@Nuclear_darkness: Thank for the tip, unfortunately, it didn't make any difference. :-(

It does seem quieter today, I can't hear it in my quiet office. I'll check it again tonight, before deciding whether to go back to Micro Anvika.

Re: eee pc 900 "screen whine"

All the other whines people are talking about can definitely be there, but we can 100% certainly say that this particular high-pitched noise comes from the screen (or the inverter which has been suggested elsewhere).

Re: eee pc 900 "screen whine"

Is it the same on AC power and on battery?  Often, the power brick may emit such a high pitched whine, and it can depend on how much current is being drawn (which may explain why it is louder when the backlight is turned up).  Or if it's not, at least it's worth testing.

I found it to be the same regardless of whether it's on AC or battery...

is there any way that the whine could be a defect? and a repairable one perhaps???

what OS are you all running?  Is it a software-related issue or hardware-related??? Try changing OS or use different driver to see if that affects it...

Re: eee pc 900 "screen whine"

Mine emits a quiet screen whine which I have found very annoying in quiet environments, I emailed my supplier last night and he has said he will swap it for another one early next week, no questions asked.

Re: eee pc 900 "screen whine"

I get the same problem until I turn the brightness down to almost nothing and then the sound stops. I have included some extra info below to see if we can establish a pattern. I never ran the original Linux OS but will install it again later today to see if that makes any difference.

- Bought in UK from ebuyer
- Running XP Pro
- Problem occurs at all times even on battery only use
- noise is present in Bios screen before booting to XP

Re: eee pc 900 "screen whine"

It won't be anything to do with the OS - it's a hardware issue.

I think I can hear it coming from the screen and the main body of the machine.  The power supply for the screen backlight may be on the motherboard.

It's a duty cycle issue - the backlight is dimmed by it being switched on and off rapidly, which is to avoid wasting power and generating heat.  The "duty cycle" (ratio of on to off periods) varies with the brightness, but the frequency doesn't - hence you hear a constant pitch whine but the volume changes with screen brightness.  The volume change isn't as simple as loud at one end and quiet at the other - on mine, at least, it gets louder and quieter again with different brightness levels.  This will be due to a complicated relationship between the stimulus and the mechanical properties of the components which are making a noise.  Even at maximum brightness you hear it (unlike with a fluorescent backlight) because the LEDs are not driven with 100% duty cycle - if they were, they'd burn out.  (You get a greater perceived brightness by overdriving the LEDs for less than 100% of the time compared with driving them at their limit, constantly.)

It may be possible to reduce the noise by putting epoxy resin adhesive on the inductor of the switch-mode voltage regulator that drives the LEDs, but as there seems to be noise from the screen area - the LEDs themeselves?? - then it might not help much.

Note that the LEDs operate off low voltage - there isn't an inverter producing hundreds of volts as for fluorescent backlighting.  The voltage regulator will still operate on the same switch-mode principle, and it will oscillate at ultrasonic frequencies.  As I said, what you hear is the on-off switching to do the dimming.

Do you mean that the microphone is picking up a whine which is being fed to the speakers?  That's possible, but it's not the whole story.  Unfortunately the microphone does definitely pick up the whine - do a sound recording and listen, or look at the spectrogram graph and you will see little spikes caused by the whine and its harmonics.

Re: eee pc 900 "screen whine"

As well as the OS issue, can we nail fan problems on the head?  "Angry mosquito" is indeed an apt description for the fan - I'm very disappointed that it has so much motor noise, and it's nothing to do with the screen whine.  Asus, you can do better.

i may try to do the same. i bought mine from ebuyer only about a week ago.
but having said that, is it likely to be a problem only on SOME machines? or is it a standard problem with the asus?

I dont think the poll at the top will be much help in determining this since i think a few others may have, like myself, voted that they didnt have a screen whine but then this developed a little later......

and by way of some extra information,
i bought mine from ebuyer.com in the uk
i'm running full xp pro
the whine is there most times, on battery or on mains charge
The sound appears to be coming from the screen and unusually, seems to be fairly constant no matter what the brightness is (I'll have to check this again though, because it seems a little too weird)
I only really notice it when windows has started up (i've not noticed it on startup or bios......)

Re: eee pc 900 "screen whine"

No screen whine here.

My fan does sound like an angry mosquito, but it's so quiet that I have to put my ear right next to the Eee to hear it. Maybe I went to too many rock concerts, but I can barely hear it and it doesn't bother me on a day to day basis at all.

Re: eee pc 900 "screen whine"

I've got the whine on mine, bought over the counter at micro anvika (Fenwicks).

The pitch of the whine changes if you plug in the charger, but it's there all the time sad

Im running the stock linux that came installed.
