Hey guys i thought it would be good if we had a thread about what games are playable on the 701 EEE PC using either a Linux or Windows operating system - please state which. It will help people save time as they can just check the list to see what games will play! :)
Remember this is for 'playable' games so that means a reasonable FPS! I don't want to see Crysis on this list! :P
If possible please state how the game played and what settings the game was on (i am expecting all to be on low lol!)
I hope this thread to build up over time and hopefully be a sticky.

Stole this from another thread.

World of Warcraft.

Posted Image

WoW Details:
Size is 7.2GB with BC installed. Game is copied from HDD to Portable USB 5400RPM HDD.
Registry is exported from PC to EEE PC and modified the paths to point to USB HDD (D: on the EEE)
Game is run DIRECTLY from the USB HDD.

Game Settings:
Resolution had to be set manually by editing the config.wtf file to 800x480, else it'll be panning in the game at 800x600 as well.
ALL graphic settings are set at minimum or turn off.

Load Time:
From running WoW.exe to logon server to Character selection screen, it was quite fast!
After clicking "Enter World", the WoW Load screen took about 10secs (I was in IronForge)

Playability Rating: 3/10
As you can see, the UI very tiny, i forgot to set the UI Scale to make it bigger.. lol..
Playable if you're just running around, doing AH, chatting, etc.
It's laggy due to the CPU and GFX, dun think you will wan to play Arena/BG with this kind of system lag!
Never really run out of town to fight creeps, probably will try later.. too long nvr play WoW le.. hehe..

WC3 - DOTA

Posted Image

WC3 - DOTA Details:
Size is 1.51GB with FT installed. Game is copied from HDD to Portable USB 5400RPM HDD.
Registry is exported from PC to EEE PC and modified the paths to point to USB HDD (D: on the EEE)
Game is run DIRECTLY from the USB HDD.
Why 1.5GB game size? Coz i realised my Download Maps folder is 481MB! Too many maps inside.. hahaha..

Game Settings:
Resolution had to be set manually by editing the REGISTRY keys (resWidth, resHeight) to 800x480, else it'll be panning in the game at 800x600 as well.
ALL graphic settings EXCEPT Shadows (else u can't see PA!) are turned off or LOW..
ALL 3D sounds are turned off to lower CPU load.
Mouse scroll set to LOWEST.

Load Time:
The game starts quite fast after running war3.exe.
Custom Single player mode was used to run the map.
DOTA Map loads takes about 22sec, DOTA map well known for slow load.

Playability Rating: 7/10
I played DOTA 6.40B-AI with 2 (me + AI) vs 3 (AI), end game, my side won of course. 19 kills 2 deaths. PWNage sniper items!
Early deaths due to mouse scroll too much, not used to the controls yet.
Short lag (1sec or so) at starting when character is chosen (normal behaviour) and when loading initial stuffs.
The only time it lags is when it needs to read data off the HHD as i can see the casing LED blinking.
The short lag happened a few times during the whole game (60mins)..
I had to set the mouse scroll to the lowest as the Screen resolution is so low, and the DPI of the Logitech V450 i used on the EEE is 800DPI!
Always over scroll, but i got used to it around mid-game. Played using the onboard keyboard as well.

If can output to a 15" or bigger LCD, the playability will go up to 8/10!
Never tried coz lazy to dig out my DVI to VGA converter.
After playing DOTA for 60mins, the keyboard wrist rest area is warm, but not hot.
I was in an aircon room (~25C).

I haven't tested this, since I don't own an e3 yet, but I can almost guarantee MapleStory will run on it because of its 2D nature.

Someone said that Quake 3 runs well. I plan on trying Unreal Tournament and CounterStrike on mine when I gets here.

UberNero: It's got 8MB of graphics memory allocated. I wouldn't bother ;)

Well.. Created a bottable DOS based SD memory and got going with out sound the following...

Duke Nukem 3D Orginal
Posted Image

Shadow Warror
Posted Image

And two old Serria Floppy mini games... Robbin Hood and leisure Suit Larry

Use info found on the site to format and configure a SD to boot. Inserted the SD.. Held down the ESC key. Selected the SD.. Got the C: prompt and then ran the games... Selected no sound and VESA at 640 x 480.

Need to look at DosBox. I think it will allow to simulate SB card.

Response was outstanding. It should be! ^_^

PS: Had ROTT but it comes up as you modified it... Need to work on that.

Have The original Civ to try out also...

Looking for Atari ST and RS Color Computer...

hehe Duke3D... Wikid.

Windows XP FLP I tested Quake3, works a charm. Nice framerate, High settings. set disp to 16bit however as some effects caused minor fps slowdown. It would appear that most Q3 Engine games would be playable (Medal of honor etc). But i'm not sure how well.. will do more testing when I get time. - Display in 640x480 is pulled to the left hand side of the screen however, modify the .cgf, seta r mode to -1 and modify the seta display settings and looks very nice on 800x480 once you modify the fov.!

If you look through the simpleui.rc file, you'll see that there originally was to be an included "OpenArena" game which I guess was a Quake 3 based shooter. Too bad Asus pulled it out of the final version!

Doesent surprise me, the OpenGL Support in nix seems slow?, or is it just that damn penguin game that sucks?. I had a play around with the nix distribution prior to loading FLP and that bundled game's fps was terrible..

OpenArena is actually pretty good! It's made to be a free clone of Quake 3 Arena (and is built on the engine of Q3A), and it does very well. It's too bad that it was taken out. They probably did it for space reasons, since space is so precious when you have only 2/4/8 GB.

My guess is they took it out because the violence, with guns and all, would put off some of the target market for the Eee.

Openarena is a fun and rather light FPS - it oughta run pretty well on the EEE.
EEE Fund: Who cares I finally got it 4/16/08
I got an eee after creating the "post here when you get your eee" thread, which had over 1450 posts in it, making it the forum's largest, before I could post in it. Also, XP SP3 + 8GB transcend SDHC card + 405-999mhz eeectl

Hey guys first post here!

Love this little machine, I had to put StarCraft on this guy ... only takes up 115MB of installation space, but the iso of BroodWars is 609MB =\

StarCraft runs great but the only problem is the screen, instead of stretching the image it pans to the left. StarCraft's original resolution is 640 x 480 so it leaves a big black bar to the right of the screen. I tried finding ways in the Intel GMA software to either center it or just stretch the image...still no luck =(

Sorry about the bad quality images my digi cam died so I'm using a Nokia 6300 cam =\

good to know StarCraft runs "well enough" using XP on the Eee...I'm gonna have to try it with Wine or Cedega in linux and see how well it runs.

Well that did it... the first time I ever considered putting windows on my eee :) I look forward to hearing how well (if?) it runs in wine, as Jazz said.

Pic aok!

Was expecting Duke and Warror to do that. Well it stretched rather well! Was using "DOS" and not XP...

Did try the orginal Civ... It crashed when you ht the space bar to goto the selection screen...
