By the way - you did turn wifi ON (FN-F2) didn't you? Do you see the little blue light?

i found that changing the settings to 'on boot' may have helped and also getting rid of all the other connections and starting again from network connections and not wireles networks helped. I had this problem on open and unencrypted wifi so i don't think it is a wep problem but a dns one.
my home one now works fine so it is difficult to experiment with it to try and find the cause.. i think it is dhcp related though
search also for DHCP for more sufferers

Then again I connected to free bar wifi one day, and the next nothing, and the next time nothing. So, I told them to try rebooting their wireless router and the next time I came it worked. All I can suggest is keep on trying all the fixes, but generally no dhcp offers, pending seems to cover a multitude of sins. I wish it would be more specific such as "signal strength insufficient" or "your mac address is not recognised" or "this connection needs to be reset because it is retaining an expired ip" or something more frigging descriptive than "pending".

One more thing to try is making sure the little "Enable Wireless" box is checked in the Wireless Networking dialog box...no clue how or why, but I've had this be UN-checked even with the blue light on and wifi working...
What a day a difference makes...

1) Non-alphanumeric characters in the WPA pre-shared key (PSK). I couldn't connect with an ! in the PSK.
2) You need to enter a value in the Key Index when entering the PSK. I set it to 1 and it connected OK.

I bought an EeePC 4G 701 a couple of days ago and I can't connect to any network. The same as you all, the Pending message is always there. Anyone find another solution?
I wrote to the technical support and they answered to try this:
About your problem, I guess you mostly use the encrypted AP. You'd better try below steps.
1: Choose "Network" in the Internet option, disconnect it and then delete the Connection in the "Manage".
2: Click "Create" to recreate the connection, choose "Local Area Network- Wireless", then Next.
3: Choose "Next".
4: Select Address Type, and then Next.
5: Browse Wireless Networks and then choose the one you want to use, choose the mode to be "infrastructure" and the Transfer rate to be "auto", and then Next.
6: Wireless Channel Settings, choose any channel.
7: If your AP is using the WEP or WPA encryption, you need to choose "Enable encryption" and then input the Key and Key index, choose Next.
8: Fill in the Name of connection, then choose Next.
9: You can choose the "Connect automatically at system startup" or "Start this connection when finished" if you want, and then choose Finish.
I didn't tried yet, since I'm at work. Ill try it this afternoon at home.
If anyone try this now, please let me know how it went with it.
Thanks,

In the end I tried the following in a console and it burst into life:
sudo iwconfig ath0 essid "<yourSSIDhere>"
No idea what will happen on rebooting.

ROUTER : NETGEAR WGT624 v3
Here is what I did...
Brought up the router on my Win PC so I could check status
Made sure the eeePC was not in the list of attached devices.
Checked the properties of the connection & checked ANY for the channel
Tried connecting got the no DHCPoffers error & status was pending
did the sudo iwconfig
as soon as I did it, the router showed me as connected BUT I couldn't do anything on the eeePC - it still said pending
I did a reconnect of the router.. still no good
changed properites to the correct channel
eeePC asked me if I wanted to reconnect & I said yes...
ALL OK...
Looks like I had to do the sudo iwconfig before trying to connect??
Now I will fool around with various alternatives to see if I can get a consistant connection
installed XP then moved it to a USB stick
900A - trying to get 16 gig SSD to work
