Try Virtual Touchpad Cover -google it. It's shareware, but only costs $2 to buy - and you can use it free with a single nag screen when you re-enable the touchpad. You chose which combination of hotkeys deactivates and then reactivates the pad - and it really works! This is one piece of shareware I don't think I will mind actually forking out for.

Sweet! Nicely spotted, I'll have a look at this when I get home tonight.

Hey Lisa_T,

Based on your postings that I remember, I see that typing is pretty important to you. :-)

Anyways, That is an interesting software, but have you tried updating the elantech touchpad driver and turning on the "disable when typing" option or something? I automatically stops the touchpad activity when you're typing so that the cursor accidentally quantum leaps. I've been pretty happy with that.

I have an Eee 1000 running XP (the 40SSD model, NOT 1000H) and I updated the touch pad drivers, and tried out the "disable touchpad while typing" thing. It worked great while typing, I didn't have any problems with the cursor jumping around on me.

However, this created a lag between when you stopped typing, and when the mouse would work again. It was a short lag, maybe 1-1.5 seconds, but with the amount of mouse-type-mouse operations that I do, that got to be rather annoying, so I turned it off again. I may also have to turn off the two finger zooming as well, since when using firefox sometimes when I try to scroll with two fingers, it ends up zooming instead... Not to mention, having to zoom isn't that frequent of an event for me.

I might have to give this software a try, great find.

I did actually disable tapping while typing, but there can be issues with that. Besides, I like reading on my Eee and using the keys to navigate an ebook is an exercise in RSI I find. It's easier if I can switch the touchpad off altogether for that period and then renable it when I need it. I have mine configured to toggle on/off with the F3 key which isn't in use otherwise, and I find it works well both for extended typing and for times when I simply don't want to be bothered with the touchpad.

(BTW, Grantmaster, your repeated key tip has absolutely transformed my usage of the keyboard!)

I liked this program *so* much that I registered it within minutes of installing it on my system. Thank you Lisa for this worthy find.

i noticed if i turn on disable when keying it screws with my 2 finger scroll. my 2 finger scroll with that on ends up only scrolling only once per touch.

I found the same thing, actually. As soon as I turned on the disable when typing option all my scrolling etc options went - which was one reason why I didn't find it a satisfactory solution.

Are you guys sure that the latest elantech driver hasn't fixed it? I do remember that at one point i was very disappointed by the two finger scroll (and stopped using it) but now it seems to work fine with the disable when typing option.

The disable while typing messes up my scrolling. I am trying out this software. I have noticed that it works and single left clicks are no longer registered. I also cannot move the mouse when it is on. I was glad to note that two finger scrolling and 3 finger page down and up still worked. I don't think I do any of the multi touches by accident so that is a nice feature to me. I wish I could have used the escape key, function key or window key for my hotkey.

Nice find Lisa.
