I've found a remake of the old arcade game Zaxxon that is very easy to run on Xandros.

First, find the tarbell located at http://www.pankhurst...net/zaxxon.html
For some reason, Firefox on my 2G wants to save the tarbell file as a .tar extension, so rename the extension to .tgz so that the file saved is something like 'zaxrr.wip.0.4.125.tgz'
You can then use the file manager to extract a folder named 'zaxxonrr' from the tgz
Then all you need to do is go into this folder and run the executable file 'zaxrr'

That's it! It's a fun but hard game. The graphics can be run in either a window or full-screen.

That's really fine, thanks. I uesd to play it on the arcades in the 1980s. So this will give a nice retro-fun....

I just tried this on my EEE, and it looks gorgeous. I've got a few issues with the game, though. First, there's supposed to be a big splashy explosion whenever you're struck with enemy fire. All you get is a puny little plume of flame in this version of the game. Secondly, it's very cheap. Visual cues like the flashing of missile silos that were in the arcade aren't here, resulting in a lot of frustrating deaths. Still, it's very promising. If the developer fixes these problems and tones down the speed a bit, this will totally kick butt.

If you like 'classic' arcade games, check out the posting I made regarding 'defendguin'. I find it's a fairly decent clone of Defender; it even sounds like the sounds effects were ripped from the arcade version of that game.

BTW, I'm looking for a good version of 'Asteroids' to play on my eee....

Try Maelstrom. You should be able to download it straight from one of the repositories listed on this site. It's pretty slick for a homebrew, with crisp graphics that are noticeably improved over the arcade game that inspired it. It doesn't stray too far from its source material, however, so don't expect any big surprises.

Sorry to bump (and hijack) an old thread, but I've installed maelstrom on my 4G Surf but when I try to run it I get a segmentation fault. The only dependency I needed to install was libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2 and everything seemed to go smoothly.

So has anyone gotten malestrom to actually run on the Eee? What's the best way to troubleshoot a segfault?

The first thing to do with any segfault is to reboot. :P If that doesn't fix it, then there's cause for further investigation.

Genius! The reboot worked!

I'll file this under "I should have thought of that."

Well, it's not entirely obvious that rebooting would cure it unless you know what "segmentation fault" means to begin with, so I'm not sure that "I should have thought of that" is being entirely fair on yourself. ;)

For what it's worth, a segmentation fault usually tends to occur when an application attempts to access memory or memory locations it's not allowed to, or if it attempts to do this in the wrong way. Once you know what's behind it, you can see why it might happen after installing something new.

Glad it worked, by the way. :D
