I just got my EEE yesterday and spent all of 5 minutes on the Xandros system before rushing off to change it.
After a long and intimidating install process involving a few different distros (MINT, UBUNTU, and eeeXUBUNTU) i finally got eeeXubuntu to work with no problems, and am enjoying it now. I've only altered a few settings, nothing that should affect shutdown as far as I know, but hey...

The issue: It started only after installing the new OS (of this I'm about 90% sure). The problem is when I select shutdown, it shuts down fine, but the little green light with the lightbulb symbol is still on, and the fan is still running. I can still hold down the power button for a few seconds to turn it off fully, otherwise it just sits there. So my questions are is it safe to shut it down like that, and how can I stop it from doing this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

On Ubuntu/Xubuntu, the following works for me:

Edit the file /etc/default/halt

add the following line right at the end:

rmmod snd-hda-intel

don't know if this will work for eeeXubuntu, but it's worth a go.

I got this fix from someone else on this forum.

Glad to be of service!

Seems this question comes up quite frequently, so I've added it to the FAQ.

The same problem started for me when I went from eeeXubuntu R2 to R3. I'll try this fix tonight. What exactly does it do?

Ah thanks a lot. Might also be intereting to note that this only happens whe you shut down while connected to a network.

Worked for me too - thanks.

P.S. Where is the FAQ? I didn't find it on the Wiki pages...

You need to edit the file as root to save it. Try this

sudo mousepad /etc/default/halt

Working with ubuntu I found that this solution stopped the sound card from being recognized. However I found that in correcting a problem with USB memory recognition :
sudo nano /etc/fstab

Comment out this line with a #:

/dev/sdb1 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9600 user, noauto, exec 0 0

did solve this problem as well.
This Kind of makes sense as it would still be looking fro the attached CD rom to power.
Any way lucky accident on my part that may help others

All the best

My apologies for double posting but on rereading my above comment I realized that it was not as clear as I wanted.
The USB fix also fixed the power shut down not the sound card problem this was souled bu NOT altering the halt file

Are you actually typing mouse, or is that an abbreviation? You need to open the file in a text editor with root privelage, so type "sudo mousepad /etc/default/halt" then the location of the file - not just sudo mouse. Hopefully your problem is as simple as that.
