Well I installed Windows 7 (build 7000) of SD card in the same way that I did with Vista and everything has gone very smoothly.

Most drivers were found by Windows but I had to install the wireless LAN and audio drivers that came with on the EEE Top driver CD.
Once I ran Windows Update, the ATK and card reader driver were updated too.
The problem I had under Vista with the wireless LAN (sometimes it would only work after hardware manager/disable/enable) seems to have gome completely :-)

The Tablet PC features are all present as they were with Vista. The handwriting recognition and on-screen keyboard are slightly better too. The keyboard now goes mostly transparent when focus changes to another window.

Performance is pretty good again even with Aero enabled.

A big plus for me is that the MCE (and maybe WMP too) seems to buffer a bit more before playback. This means smoother DVD/Recorded TV streaming over wireless LAN. Something I have been doing a lot of.

I have seen some really cool Win 7 MCE touch screen demos on YouTube but this functionality doesn't seem to have made it into the 7000 build. Either that or I haven't got it enabled somehow or the EEE Top touchscreen doesn't support it :-( I'm pretty sure (hopeful) it's not implemented yet though.

There you go. If you were thinking of giving Windows 7 a go, it will run on your EEE Top.

BTW, mine is standard (1GB) with the Windows power profile - High Performance selected and with 4GB SD card configured as ReadyBoost.

If anyone is interested in this topic, I can put a video on YouTube of Windows 7 running on my EEE Top. Let me know what you'd like to see.

I'm quite interesting in your expirience. The only pity thing is that the build will expire on 02.07.2009.

Sounds very good so I had a go.
Installed - all OK but wireless network not recognised.
Am trying to install drivers and will see what happens.

I solved my wireless problem - I installed the drivers from this link:

There are cracks available to make this work beyond the 30 day period. Besides, this Win 7 beta will be out on MSDN soon anyway so if you have a subscription you can then run Win 7 legally :-)

If you haven't installed the sound card drivers either, you'll find that the microphone doesn't work despite there being no warnings in Device Manager.

Also the SRS Sound utility works fine too. And if you want the keyboard hotkeys to work, it seems you have to install the EEE Manager app.

Enjoy.

I have tried to install the EEE manager app, but getting an error as the op system is incorrect. Did you manage to get around this.

Just sorted it - I ran setup.exe rather than asussetup.exe.

I have to say that I did this and win7 is a better environment for the eeetop than xp - except for one thing. It is DAMN SLOW. I put in a 2gb sd card to get ready boost and it's still pretty bad. win7 is great with it's touchscreen features - nice big icons - mediacenter, fast boot time andd network manager but it is just too slow. think it's time to give ubuntu a go with the netbook interface - anyone tried this yet? or the easy peasy distro?

you could always try updating the RAM to 2GB - although this may invalidate the warranty. I have had problems with ubuntu and found loading really really slow.

i guess it performs better than vista did?, cause vista is close to unuseable, can't even play fullscreen tv (dvbviewer) on it, but maybe i should just give it a go myself. 2 more days left to get the beta :)

btw. MS said that next milestone is the RC, so when the beta runs out this summer we get something new to play with :)

After reading this article: Windows 7 build 7057 - Performance that blasts past XP, Vista and previous builds - http://blogs.zdnet.c...ardware/?p=3857, I decided to give build 7057 a go.

As before, everything installed very swiftly off SD card.

This time however the wireless network adapter didn't require any additional drivers. Previously (Vista and Win 7 build 7000) the wireless adapter would only work 90% of the time and certainly not after resuming from sleep (requiring disable/enable). Now it works flawlessly. Reason enough to go to build 7057 if you are already running windows 7 build 7000.

The only thing that requires the OEM driver now is the built in microphone.

I think I agree with the above article. The whole experience seems that much quicker. I think it's comparable to XP now but have done no benchmarks of my own.

Windows 7 has some great features if you are planning on using the touchscreen a lot (like if it's wall mounted in the kitchen). The ability to flick the IE icon in the taskbar to quickly access your browsing history is one of my favorite features.

I still have no sign of the fancy touch functionality in MCE that I see in so many YouTube videos. Maybe the touchscreen needs specific drivers.

As before I am running with full Aero functionality.

No. I didn't bother this time because I can live without them. I did get it working under Vista by installing the EeeManager Bar software that came with the EeeTop driver disk.

I don't see why not. I can give it a try if you want. Let you know a bit later when I get home.

So: I have installed win 7 RC yesterday in about one hour time, just unpacked with winrar into a folder on the C drive; running setup from XP win 7 installed on the D drive, in a dual boot configuration; works like a charm, I won't see the XP (at least till 2010, till RC expires) desktop again! Touchscreen, LAN, soundcard, everything smooth and fast; a real win-ner 7!

I think the "tactile interface" is redundant. If you want similar functionality, just put the shortcuts on your desktop and increase the icon size. Or better yet, just poke your finger at the Start button and get access to your whole computer.

Hmmm.... win7 RC is great, running and stable on my EEE topPC, but: did anybody got the Multitouch sreen option working on the EEE top?? Touchscreen is working fine and well (as a mouse), but I cannot get the MULTItouch functions of win7 working. Or is it something the EEE touchscreen does not support (no multitouch)? Any advice? Thanks!
