Nearly *everyone* wants the black ones so why flood the market with white? I really hate nonsensical stuff like that. Maybe they are trying to compete w/ Mac.

Why do you assume *everybody* wants black? Since the white version is the most readily available, the people who prefer white have no reason to complain/request this color here. It's only the people who want black or some other color who would post here asking about the availability of non-white models since these aren't readily available. It's a variation of "supply and demand" -- the less the supply of a certain color, the more the "demand" for that color and vice versa. :)

I wanted white so it didn't get hot in the summer but I got black as it was cheaper.

It may be true that eeeuser posters are not typical of all users and those who respond to polls even less so, put I can't recall black ever having lost to white in a color poll here.

The white, especially the pearl white, does stand out in a crowd of faux aluminum and black. HPs lastest offerings are also very attractive, with designs ranging from odd to elegant.

I alsmot got white for my 4G, but decided against because it would draw too much attention at the office and out and about, heh.

It's a weird situation, I started off with a white 701, and always thought the black looked better so ended up buying a black 701 and selling the white one. I think it must have been the black screen surround, as I have now just bought a white 900 and I prefer the look to my black 701.

Ok Ok....so I'm biased a tad. But everyone I know wishes they could get it in black and I don't see the big deal w/ having both available. It seems to me that they could sell more because they would get both crowds. :)

Asus is playing an interesting game of poker. I don't know what term is being used today, but many of the people on this site are what would have been called "change agents" 30 years ago--those who influence the purchasing decisions of others. How many of us had others buy 701s because they saw ours and heard great things about them? Similarly, how many of us STOPPED people from buying 701s because we told them the 900 was so close at hand? Asus is gambling that some of the truly compulsive of us (those that want black to the point of refusing to buy white) will wait for the black. We will...as long as something else doesn't come along. If Dell, for example, (ore anyone else) releases its offering before Asus has us roped in, there's a real chance they may lose us and the circle we influence.

This can sound self-aggrandizing, but think of what goes on with you and your associates. Typically, our choices are at least considered if not mimiced, if only because we tend to be early adopters. When I decided zip disks were a good thing, everyone in my center followed along. When I abandoned them for flash drives, that was the end of zip disks. When I adopted i>clickers in my teaching 2 years ago, I got invited to give three workshops demonstrating them. I doubt I'm exceptional among the posters here.

I can identify with this also, to a degree (though not quite to the degree in your example here, as far as I can remember  ), so I see exactly what you're getting at.

What exactly is an i<clicker for, by the way? I just looked it up out of curiousity, but at a glance I couldn't seem to find a particularly specific answer as to what it could be used for/as part of.

Not at all. A number of friends and co-workers became interested in the Eee 701 when I first showed it to them online (Asus never gave me a chance to order one before announcing the 900, lol). I'm sure once I get my 900 it will impress them even further, and possibly even get Asus a few sales. Now what they 'should' do is make 4GB and 8GB versions of the 900 at a lower price point, replacing the 701/702. I think a lot of people would hesitate buying the 700 series simply because of the screen size and resolution. I know I did.

i think you hear more people talking about they want black is because the black is not available yet. you dont hear people wanting white because the people who wants white can just get it now and they dont need to complain.

Actually all of my laptops have been black in the past. Black is just a more comfortable feel for me and I find that I don't get any "molding glare" that I see on white laptops which can sometimes be distracting from the display.

So in response to your comment...I want black because I want black. ;)

The i>clicker is a classroom response system. Typically, asking questions in class gets only a sea of blank stares. Most students are (not unreasonably) anxious about volunteering an answer that might be wrong and make them look foolish in front of others. With the i>clicker, one phrases questions in a multiple choice format. Students use their individual clickers to register an A-E with the results available instantly. It gives everyone a chance to see how their thinking corresponds to others in the class. It's great for teachers, too, since we know instantly whether students are understanding what we are saying. I've restructured lectures on the fly when it was clear that particular points needed greater emphasis.

True.. but it makes ya wonder if there would be folks holding out for white or downright refusing to buy black if Asus had released the 4G, 8G, and both 900 models in black first.

BTW, I'm in the "anything but white" camp. And I completely give up on their game if they announce the launch of the Atom-based 900 right before the black Celerons hit the market.

Don't forget that there are others who don't care what color the laptop is...

I'm in this camp too :) Now where are the black 900s?

I prefer the look of the white....it used to be all computers were beige til everyone got sick of it and then they started being mostly black...now I think people are getting sick of that and thats why white and colors are becoming so popular. So please don't make sweeping judgements like "everyone wants black." :-)
